Walking on the Word: Trusting God When Faith Meets the Storm….byBryanStepping out in faith is one of the greatest challenges and privileges of the Christian life. Bryan recently shared a powerful revelation from Matthew 14, where Peter walked on water toward Jesus. It wasn’t Peter’s own strength or ability that allowed him to step out, it was the power of Jesus’ word. When Peter said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water” (Matthew 14:28), he understood something crucial: without Jesus’ command, he had no business stepping out. He knew he couldn’t do it on his own, but if the Lord spoke the word, then he could walk on it. So many times, we make decisions based on what looks good, what seems right, or what feels urgent, but we haven’t waited for a word from the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Peter didn’t step out because of his own understanding—he stepped out because he trusted Jesus. And in that trust, the supernatural happened.
As Bryan pointed out, Peter wasn’t walking on the water—he was walking on the word. The water itself had no power to hold him up, but Jesus’ command did. In the same way, when God gives us a word, it doesn’t matter what the circumstances look like. If He says, “Come,” then the impossible becomes possible. Romans 10:17 tells us, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” It’s not about blind faith—it’s about faith that is rooted in what God has spoken. But then something happened—Peter took his eyes off Jesus. He saw the wind and the waves, and suddenly fear crept in. The Bible says, “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” (Matthew 14:30). Bryan made an important point: the scripture doesn’t say Peter immediately sank—it says he began to sink. Even in his doubt, the word of Jesus was still sustaining him. And when he cried out, “Lord, save me!” the next verse says, “Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him” (Matthew 14:31). This is such a picture of God’s grace. Even when we waver, even when fear tries to pull us under, Jesus is always there to lift us up. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand” (Psalm 37:23-24). Peter may have lost focus for a moment, but Jesus never lost sight of Peter. Bryan also spoke about the importance of waiting on God’s timing. Many people try to force doors open, rushing ahead of God, only to find themselves frustrated when things don’t work out. But when we walk in obedience, we don’t have to make things happen—God does. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Waiting on God doesn’t mean doing nothing—it means actively trusting Him, listening for His voice, and stepping forward only when He says, “Come.” Too often, people chase their dreams without first seeking God’s plan. Bryan reminded us that we don’t follow our dreams—we follow the Dream Maker. Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” When we follow God’s leading, He provides everything we need—the resources, the open doors, the right people at the right time. There is a place called “there,” the center of His will, and when we walk with Him daily, we will always be in the right place at the right time. The key is keeping our eyes on Jesus. When Peter was focused on Jesus, he did the impossible. But the moment he looked at the storm, fear took over. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” When our focus is on Jesus, peace follows. Fear has no power when our eyes are fixed on the One who commands the wind and the waves. Bryan’s message is a call to trust in God’s word, to step out in faith only when He speaks, and to keep our eyes on Jesus no matter what storms arise. If God has given you a word, hold onto it. Walk on it. And know that even if you begin to waver, His hand is always there to catch you. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Whatever He has called you to, trust Him, step forward, and keep walking in faith.
